Adjuvants enhance pesticide performance through three mechanisms: non-ionic surfactants (NIS, 0.1-0.5% v/v) reduce surface tension for better leaf coverage, crop oil concentrates and methylated seed oils (MSO, 1-2% v/v) improve cuticular penetration of lipophilic actives, and drift control agents (polymer-based, 0.05-0.25% v/v) reduce fine droplet formation during aerial or boom spray application.

Glyphosate SL performs best with ammonium sulfate (2% w/v) to counteract hard water cation antagonism, plus a non-ionic surfactant for wetting. Lipophilic fungicides (tebuconazole, azoxystrobin) show 15-30% improved rainfastness with MSO compared to NIS alone. Herbicide applications by aircraft require drift control agents to keep >90% of spray volume in the 200-400 μm droplet range.
