EC is a solvent-based formulation type where the active ingredient is dissolved in an organic carrier with emulsifiers. Agrospear produces EC formulations with stable emulsion performance and active content accuracy of ±2%.

Emulsifiable Concentrate (EC) is one of the longest-established and most widely used agrochemical formulation types. The active ingredient is dissolved in an organic solvent together with emulsifier blends, producing a clear or translucent liquid that forms a stable oil-in-water emulsion when diluted in the spray tank.

How EC formulation works

The active ingredient is fully dissolved in a solvent system — typically an aromatic or aliphatic hydrocarbon, or a polar solvent such as N-methylpyrrolidone depending on solubility. A blend of non-ionic and anionic emulsifiers is added at a ratio optimized for the specific solvent-ai pair. When the farmer pours the EC into water, the emulsifier system creates a fine oil-in-water emulsion with droplets typically in the 1–5 μm range, distributing the active ingredient uniformly throughout the spray volume.

Benefits of EC formulations

EC formulations remain a staple of crop protection for several practical reasons:

  • Fast action — the solvent carrier can penetrate cuticular wax layers, accelerating uptake and rainfastness
  • Excellent penetration — dissolved active ingredient enters plant tissue more readily than suspended particles, giving superior contact and translaminar activity
  • Simple production — dissolution and blending require less specialized equipment than wet milling (SC) or granulation (WDG), making EC cost-effective at scale
  • Broad compatibility — EC tank-mixes well with many other formulation types and adjuvants
  • High active loading — many active ingredients reach higher concentrations in EC than in water-based formulations

Emulsion stability is the critical quality parameter for EC.
