Water-Dispersible Granule (WDG), also known as Dry Flowable (DF), is a dust-free granular formulation that disintegrates and disperses rapidly when added to water in the spray tank. WDG combines the storage and handling advantages of a dry product with the application performance of a liquid suspension, making it the preferred solid formulation for modern agriculture.
How WDG formulation works
The active ingredient is blended with dispersants, wetting agents, binders and disintegrants, then processed through wet granulation (fluid-bed or high-shear) or extrusion to form uniform granules in the 0.5–2.0 mm range. The granule structure is designed to break apart rapidly on contact with water — disintegrants swell and fracture the granule, dispersants suspend the released particles, and wetting agents ensure the particles are wetted and distributed throughout the spray volume.
Benefits of WDG formulations
WDG formulations address the key limitations of wettable powders while retaining their storage advantages:
- Dust-free — granules eliminate the inhalation hazard and operator exposure associated with WP powders, meeting increasingly strict regulatory requirements
- Easy handling — granules flow freely, do not cake, and can be measured by volume or weight without dust or spillage
- Precise dosing — uniform granule size and consistent bulk density allow accurate volumetric dosing
- Good shelf stability — dry granules resist microbial growth and chemical degradation better than water-based SC formulations, particularly in tropical storage conditions
- Reduced packaging volume — higher bulk density than WP means smaller, lighter packaging per kilogram of active ingredient
Production methods
Agrospear employs two WDG production routes depending on the active ingredient and customer specification:
Wet granulation (fluid-bed) — the active ingredient and formulation aids are suspended in a fluid-bed granulator and sprayed with a binder solution. The resulting granules are spherical, free-flowing and disintegrate rapidly. This method is preferred for high-value active ingredients where uniform granule size is critical.
Extrusion granulation — the active ingredient blend is wetted with a binder solution, extruded through a die, and spheronized or cut to length. Extrusion is cost-effective for higher-volume products and achieves excellent hardness and low friability.
Agrospear WDG specifications
Every WDG batch produced at Agrospear meets or exceeds these validated specifications:
| Parameter | Specification | |-----------|--------------| | Disintegration time | < 3 min | | Suspension rate (30 min) | > 80% | | Friability | < 3% | | Moisture content | < 3% | | pH (1% suspension) | 5.0–9.0 | | Wet sieve test (75 μm) | > 98% pass | | Accelerated stability | Pass at 54°C / 14 days | | Shelf life | 2 years at ambient storage |
The <3 min disintegration time ensures that granules are fully dispersed before spraying begins — no lumps, no nozzle blockage, no uneven application. Friability below 3% means granules survive handling, transport and tropical storage without generating dust.
Production at Agrospear
WDG production runs on dedicated granulation lines equipped with fluid-bed granulators, extruders, dryers and automated packaging. Each batch is tested for disintegration time, suspension rate, friability and moisture content before release.
