For foliar application they reduce surface tension, improve wetting and spreading on leaf surfaces, and enhance spray droplet coverage. Modern non-ionic surfactants (ethoxylated alcohols, alkyl polyglucosides) offer excellent tank-mix compatibility and low phytotoxicity, and formulations built with them maintain stable dilutions across hard and soft water types.

Oil Adjuvants (MSO, COC, Horticultural Oil)

Oil adjuvants (methylated seed oil, crop oil concentrate, horticultural mineral oil) are hydrocarbon-based products renowned for exceptional cuticle penetration. They solubilise the waxy leaf cuticle and create a reservoir of active ingredient at the leaf surface, making them the preferred adjuvant for systemic herbicides and fungicides that must translocate. Oil adjuvants are typically used at 0.5–2 % v/v and can boost efficacy 2–3× compared to surfactant alone on hard-to-wet species.

Drift Control Agents (Polyacrylamide, Guar Gum)

Drift control agents are polymeric thickeners (polyacrylamide, guar gum, xanthan gum) that increase spray droplet size distribution, reducing the fraction of fine droplets (< 150 µm) prone to off-target drift. They are essential for aerial application and ground spraying near sensitive boundaries. Drift control agents increase viscosity of the spray mix and must be compatible with the formulation's existing rheology profile.

  • You are in a hot, dry environment where rapid cuticle penetration is critical
  • Maximum systemic uptake outweighs cost and phytotoxicity risk
  • You are applying systemic herbicides (e.g., ACCase inhibitors, ALS inhibitors)
  • Rainfastness within 30 minutes of application is required

Choose Drift Control Agents When:

  • Aerial application is the primary method (mandatory in many jurisdictions)
  • Spray drift onto adjacent sensitive crops or habitats is a regulatory concern
  • You need to reduce V100 (volume fraction < 150 µm) below regulatory thresholds

Surfactants are incorporated directly into the formulation during the milling or mixing stage — they adsorb onto particle surfaces and become integral to the dispersion system. Oil adjuvants are typically added as tank-mix partners rather than built into the formulation, since their hydrocarbon base can destabilise aqueous systems like SC. Drift control agents are always tank-mix additions; their polymeric structure requires separate hydration and mixing protocols to avoid gelation.
